Language support (ELD/SLD)
DISCOVER THE WORLD THROUGH LANGUAGE LEARNING
We know that learning a new language can be exciting, but also challenging. That’s why at Sage College, we strive to ensure students feel comfortable and happy while learning Spanish or English. Our goal is for them to fully participate in school activities, understand their teachers, and make new friends.
What is done in ELD and SLD classes?
ELD (English Language Development) and SLD (Spanish Language Development) classes are designed for students who have not yet mastered these languages. They focus on speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills in Spanish and English through fun, dynamic activities that will facilitate learning and build confidence.
Who supports the students?
A specialized language development team supports each student in their learning. Together with the teachers, a supportive environment is created so that progress is constant and motivating. Learning Spanish and English not only improves communication with friends and teachers, it also opens up a world of opportunities!
The Spanish Language Development (SLD) program supports students who join us with insufficient Spanish skills to easily access the mainstream curriculum in this language. Our program offers different levels of support, supervised by teachers specialized in multilingual learning. It is closely aligned with the linguistic needs of the academic curriculum and aims to help students integrate autonomously as quickly as possible.
Through SLD classes our students will be able to:
- Improve your ability to communicate fluently in Spanish in the school and community setting.
- Acquire the English necessary to develop your potential and advance academically both inside and outside of school.
- Develop skills such as numeracy, media awareness, scientific understanding, and group work.
- Experience and reinforce a sense of self-worth based on pride in one’s cultural heritage.
- Understand the similarities and differences between your culture of origin and the values of our school.
The English Language Development (ELD) program supports students whose first language is not English, from their early days at Sage College through to their preparation for higher education. It aims to improve students’ English skills while always celebrating their cultural diversity. This philosophy is applied throughout the school and ensures a smooth transition between Primary, Secondary, and High School.
Through ELD classes our students will be able to:
- Improve fluent English communication in schools and the community.
- Provide the English necessary to advance academically and develop their potential.
- Develop skills such as numeracy, media awareness, scientific understanding, and teamwork.
- Promote self-esteem based on pride in one’s cultural heritage.
- Understand the similarities and differences between your culture of origin and the school’s values.

Educational support and well-being
OUR SENCO DEPARTMENT
At Sage College, we recognize the importance of addressing both the educational and emotional needs of our students. Our team is led by María de la Vega, Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), and Sara Ruiz, School Psychologist, who work closely with Emily Westwood, Pastoral Care Manager. They collaborate with teachers and families to ensure that students with special educational needs receive appropriate support. They focus on students’ emotional well-being and mental health, designing tailored interventions to support their holistic development.
Throughout the school year, they organize workshops and activities for students, families, and teachers, promoting emotional well-being and creating a close-knit educational community. Their goal is to provide each student with the tools they need to overcome challenges, developing emotional skills and healthy relationships.
